After watching this film, will you still able to eat 'dinuguan' and 'lamang-loob?'
Well, this is the question that first came to my mind after watching this newest horror movie "The Substance" which stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quiad. Yup, yours truly Runner Rocky got invited to watch and cover the red carpet premiere night and celebrity screening of the film, September 19, 2024 at the Red Carpet Cinemas in Shangri-la Plaza. Still, it's hard to move on after watching the full movie (you will get what I mean if you watch the movie).
Horror movie or series is my favorite genre since childhood. And since this genre is my forte, I can say that "The Substance" is one of the best horror film that I've watched! All of the elements of a horror film is present in this movie - the shocking effect; the palpitating music in most of the important scenes; the cinematography; the award-winning acting of the major cast and characters; the prosthetics that really look natural and scary; and the plot twist that you would never expect!
The movie has a multiple climax - 'Ung akala mong ayun na, hindi pa pala! May isasagad pa pala! If you think you already reached the end, you will definitely think twice 'cause the movie truly ends with a bang... a bang full of blood and surprises!
"The Substance" also gives us a well-rounded mix of emotions. It didn't focus only on its horror aspect, it shares a variety of humor and laughter on top of drama and mystery! It even touches 'fitness' specially when the character of Sue comes alive. I still can't get over of "Pump It Up!" (Now you know why I put my movie review here in my fitness blog! Hehe...)
On the deeper part of the story, the movie tackles two important aspects of life - ageism and self-contentment! Many of us are afraid of getting old and most of us are not contented on what we have. Therefore what many of us do, we alter, we tweak the natural characteristics that we have leading to negative and shocking consequences! In these uncertainties, the so-called "the substance" comes into the story twisting the fate of the lead character!
Meanwhile, during the red carpet premiere night of the movie, I've asked some of the celebrity guest of what is their reaction after watching the film. And here are their thoughts compiled in one shorts video:
Directed by the visionary Coralie Fargeat and is distributed by CreaZion Studios, "The Substance" is showing in Philippine cinemas starting September 25. And yes for me, this movie is Demi Moore's most challenging movie that she ever done! Two thumbs up for her performance, such a brilliant actress in any generation that she've showcased in the movie!
On the other hand, this is also my first time to watch Margaret Qualley in a lead role but I was amazed with her acting portraying both good and bad character!
Now after watching the film, I dare you if you can still eat the famous Filipino cuisine "dinuguan" and "lamang-loob ng baboy o manok!" Can you also tell me who is behind the mysterious "the substance?" If the instructions were followed correctly, what do you think will be the fate of the characters of Demi and Margaret? Can you also guess the reason behind the "stitches" on the spine of the lady? But one thing for sure, the movie will give you an unforgettable New Year celebration in red! 09/21/2024 (Runner Rocky)
